Landslides can occur when one candidate or party is perceived as far superior to its opponents, through unfair elections, or as a result of particular voting systems which may produce distorted or disproportionate results.

Did you see that the proportion of seats relative to the number of votes seem to be biased towards one political party/group only?
UMNO – 35.9% of votes, 49.8% of seats (+14%)
MCA – 15.5% of votes, 14.2% of seats (-1%)
MIC – 3.2% of votes, 4.1% of seats (+1%)
Gerakan – 3.7% of votes, 4.6% of seats (+1%)

Did you see that the proportion of seats relative to the number of votes seem to be biased against the opposition?
DAP – 9.9% of votes, 5.5% of seats (-4%)
PAS – 15.2% of votes, 3.2% of seats (-12%)
Keadilan – 8.9% of votes, 0.5% of seats (-8%)

Numbers speak louder than words. These numbers tell me that there is something wrong with the electoral process in this country. Something that needs improvement. Unfortunately, I cannot propose a solution. Those out there who have any ideas should share them if they have any.

Q: Do you read blogs?

A: I don’t. I don’t waste my time. The few pieces that people print for me are just rubbish.
I’d rather spend my time to do things that are constructive; that go down directly to the people who are really in need of the help of the government.
Our bloggers are really not up to standard. When they put up something, it’s not something that they want to discuss in a very intellectual way.
It’s more because of their anger – the language they use. Why should I read all this rubbish?
When the standard of our bloggers is upgraded, then probably I will look at what is written.
But anyway, they are a minority. My concern is for the majority.

A: No. But that is the way of the opposition. If you are a political party, we can understand. But if you are a respectable society, that’s not an honourable way to do it — not when the government accords you respect.
How can you bring yourself so low? The moment you do that, we don’t respect you.
If I say to you, “M****r*****r you!”, can you say, “Eh, let us sit down, we’ll talk about it.” No!
You are lawyers, man! People respect you. So, do it in an honourable way.

Discussion:

The ever eloquent Nazri comes up with another gem for the archives! Not only is it alright for ministers to swear in Parliament, it is now alright for ministers to swear during an interview with a newspaper (without even bothering to tell the reporter to take that off the record). Anyway, for someone that complains that he doesn’t read blogs because of the language, he certainly is very polite in the interview isn’t he?

Actually, I can imagine being friends with this guy, because we seem to love swearing so much. Lest this blog be seen as an opposition vehicle to discredit the government, let me be clear that this blog will post anything worthy that comes out from any Malaysian’s mouth. Therefore, to show my neutrality, I would like to stump for the re-election of Nazri for the next elections. With Nazri around, the blog should not be found wanting in quotable material.

And for the chaste ones reading this and trying to figure out what “M****r*****r” means, it’s something to do with a person, usually male, that possesses an excessive loving of the female being that birthed you.

Typical of the mainstream media (MSM) in Malaysia, did you know that’s not the whole story? thestar.com.my conveniently left out a LOT of details; details that were published by the more reputable Malaysiakini here (Subscription needed).

Since, some of who are like me are too much of a cheap-ass to actually subscribe to Malaysiakini, here are figures that I’ve taken from a post written in The People’s Parliament.

# of registered voters transferred from Sungai Rapat: 2231
# of newly registered voters or those transferred from other areas: 3024
# of new postal voters for Ipoh Timur: 3208

So, there is now an increase of 8463 voters in Ipoh Timur. That’s for time’s the number of new voters, and 6000 more that thestar.com.my conveniently left out. What great reporting/editing!

So what’s wrong? Here is why the numbers are so shady.
2231 from Sungai Rapat: The Election Commission has not given a full and concrete explanation on why these voters were transferred, only relying on “We have the legal power, Fuck you” excuse.
3024 new and transferred: I am one of the 3024. But are there suddenly 3024 people like me who came of age/decided to exercise their right? It’s kinda doubtful right? Since Ipoh Timur only had 40000+ voters the last time around.
3208 new postal voters: WTF are postal votes, I was thinking?

To those of you who don’t know as well, here’s what the Election Commission website tells you:
Postal voters normally comprise personnel from the armed forces, Police Field Force, election officials on duty, government officers serving overseas, students studying overseas, and spouses.

Ok, so where did 3208 new postal votes come from? In IpohTimur? I don’t see any new army bases or police stations or elections offices built right? How do they justify these numbers, you ask? Well, they don’t! “We have the legal power, Fuck you”.

So yes, based on my incredible powers of observation, there is certainly some hanky panky going on in my constituency. That is the problem with this country’s election process. The elections are being run by an Election Commission which is widely believed to be under the control of the government.

Seriously, I feel like this is cheating. I don’t like being cheated. I am sure a lot of people out there feel the same way as well.
That is why, I have decided to make a stand and make myself heard and seen on 10th November 2007. 3pm, Dataran Merdeka.
There will be a mass rally to submit a memorandum to His Majesty Yang Dipertuan Agong to press for freer and fairer election processes.
If you really want to tell people that you live in a free country, this is it. Let your voice be heard. Make your presence felt. Join me in demanding our rights as citizens to a free and fair election! More details here.

Earlier, touching on the subject of manners, Karpal irked Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin (BN-Jerai) when he remarked that there was little hope of seeing courtesy and good manners in the house.

“The Jerai MP is notorious for using foul language. The Kinabatangan member (Datuk Bung Moktar Radin) is no better,” he said, referring to a foul word uttered by Badruddin during a sitting.

An angry Badruddin shouted back at Karpal. “You are no better. Calling us (BN MPs) animals… you insult people. Now you are sitting in a wheel chair. God has punished you.”

Unfazed, Karpal said his wheelchair “status” was temporary and that Badruddin should not panic when his antics in the house was revealed.

Discussion:

Actually, what else is there to discuss? Totally insulting to all people who are in wheelchairs. Don’t forget that this is the same fella who famously claimed that women who wear indecent clothes are to be blamed if they are raped. Malaysians say the darndest things and vote the darndest people into office.

Nazri: New identity can be arranged for whistleblower

KUALA KANGSAR: A new identity or even new look can be arranged for the person or persons who took the controversial video of a prominent lawyer allegedly brokering the appointment of judges, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz. He said such measures were defined under the Witness Protection Act to ensure the person’s identity was protected.

“Under the Act, they will not only be protected but can also undergo (plastic) surgery to change their look,” he told reporters after handing out duit raya and goodies to old folks in Lubuk Merbau here yesterday.

“My assurance is that we have an Act to protect them (the witnesses) … if we don’t believe in the Government, who would we trust?”

Discussion:

Actually in all my 26 years and reading the local papers, I have never heard of the existence of such a law in Malaysia. If there was such a law, then how come the opposition parties are asking for the implementation of such a law?

Anyway, since Nazri is the Minister of Law, I guess he can just make any laws he wants. But I guess the clincher would be promising witnesses protection when the laws to do so have not been passed.
